Pupil Enrichment Activities & Clubs

At Heap Bridge Village Primary School, our motto — “Working together, learning together” defines our commitment to developing the whole child through vibrant partnerships between pupils, staff, parents, and the wider community. We aspire for every child to become a positive, proactive learner who takes pride in their achievements and is fully prepared for a successful future.

To ensure our enrichment provision is intentional, inclusive, and high impact, we align our school curriculum design with the Department for Education (DfE) Enrichment Framework for Schools and Colleges.

Our Curriculum Vision and Core Values

Our curriculum is designed to be enjoyable, purposeful, and challenging, equipping children with essential skills, resilience, and cultural capital to thrive in modern society. Enrichment is not treated as an optional extra, but is woven directly into our core curriculum focus groups:

  • STEM (Science, Computing, Design Technology, and Mathematics)
  • Languages & Humanities (English, History, Geography, and MFL)
  • Arts & Culture (Art & Music)
  • Health & Well-being (Physical Education, RE, PSHCE, and Careers Education)

This structure ensures that learning across all subjects is reinforced through hands-on experiences, outdoor exploration, and creative discovery. Every enrichment opportunity is anchored in our core values:

  • BE POSITIVE: Developing independence, emotional resilience, mutual respect, and tolerance.
  • BE PROACTIVE: Empowering children to take ownership of their learning, develop leadership qualities, and prepare for future life.
  • BE PROUD: Celebrating individual and collective excellence, personal growth, and community contribution.

Delivering the 5 Core DfE Enrichment Categories

In line with Benchmark 2 of the DfE Enrichment Framework, our co-curricular and enrichment opportunities span five fundamental categories to ensure a well-rounded educational experience for every learner:

  1. Civic Engagement: Fostering democracy, pupil voice, and community responsibility through an active School Council, pupil-led Eco Refill Shop, charity initiatives like the Heywood Foodbank Harvest collection, and formal Pupil Leadership roles (including Head Prefects and Digital Leaders).
  2. Arts and Culture: Immersing pupils in creative expression through choir performances (e.g., Young Voices), instrumental tuition (ukulele and recorder), literature projects with published authors, visual printing techniques, and immersive history days (such as Ancient Egypt, Viking storytelling, and Battle of Britain radar tracking).
  3. Nature, Outdoors and Adventure: Building teamworking skills and environmental awareness through weekly Woodland Wednesday Forest School sessions in Reception, Year 6 Forest Forge den building, park-based science investigations, and local field surveys.
  4. Sport and Physical Activities: Promoting fitness, health, and sporting success through PE, dodgeball, cricket, and active representation in inter-school competitions via the Heywood Sports Association (including activities such as football, cross-country, and athletics).
  5. Developing Wider Life and Future Skills: Developing digital literacy, STEM capabilities, personal safety, and health management through SCARF wellbeing workshops, NHS oral health visits, online safety guidance, computer network modelling, and cross-school collaboration via the Digital Leader Network.

Strategic Alignment with the DfE Enrichment Benchmarks

Our approach to curriculum enrichment systematically embeds all eight DfE framework benchmarks:

  • Benchmark 1: Strategically Aligned Offer: Senior leaders and curriculum team leads oversee enrichment design to support core school improvement priorities, including reading, vocabulary acquisition, and character development.
  • Benchmark 2: Broad & Well-Rounded Offer: Activities are delivered regularly across the school year through timetabled curriculum time, specialist visitors, off-site visits, and lunchtime/after-school clubs.
  • Benchmark 3: Well-Communicated & Celebrated: We share regular updates via ClassDojo, monthly newsletters, and digital blogs, celebrating pupil achievements in assemblies and school bulletins.
  • Benchmark 4: Shaped by Community & Pupil Voice: Pupils actively shape school life through class councils, Digital Leader surveys, and peer-buddying programmes (such as Year 5 buddies supporting Reception pupils).
  • Benchmark 5: Accessible & Inclusive: We are committed to parity and tackling social disadvantage, removing barriers so that pupils with SEND, disadvantaged backgrounds, or specific wellbeing needs fully access every opportunity.
  • Benchmark 6: Working in Partnership: We leverage expertise beyond the school gate through collaborative networks (Arch Alliance), published authors, local sports associations, healthcare teams, and community groups.
  • Benchmark 7: Outcomes-Focused: Enrichment targets essential skill development, emotional literacy, physical health, and a lasting sense of school belonging.
  • Benchmark 8: Continually Improving: We regularly review engagement data, pupil feedback, and staff evaluation to refine and expand our enrichment offer year on year.

By blending academic rigor with a rich spectrum of real-world experiences, Heap Bridge Primary School ensures that every pupil leaves us confident, resilient, proud of their achievements, and ready to make a positive mark on the world.
